Decode – interpret the meaning of a sign (word, image etc.).
Ideology – a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.
Legacy Media – ‘old’ media – traditional means of communication (newspaper, TV, radio etc.) that existed before the internet.
Media Concentration – progressively, fewer individuals control more mass media, narrowing the potential for diverse ideologies to be present within the media.
Mass Media – any means of communication, such as television or newspapers that reach very large amounts of people.
Media Text – any product that can be examined, which attempts to define, describe, or represent reality.
Produser – refers to individuals who generate their own media content such as on websites such as Wikipedia and Facebook.
Public Sphere – an arena where citizens can debate/discuss common concerns; is ideally separate from the state + official economy and egalitarian + open.
Qualitative – data/research relating to qualities (e.g. how are people using media?)
Quantitative – data/research that measures quantities (e.g. how many people are using media?)
Signified – the connotations of a sign; what is evoked in the mind; what something means.
Signifier – the denotations of a sign; something that gives meaning (word/image).
Social Media – websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
